Description:

Help improve how millions of people in China learn English on Duolingo! This
is a unique opportunity to become part of the founding team of Duolingo’s
China office and work with other talented Duolingo software engineers,
designers, product managers, and learning scientists globally to develop
next-generation education technology that transforms learning. Our ideal
candidate has a PhD in TESOL or a related field and experience teaching
English to native speakers of Mandarin Chinese. You will be part of our new
initiative to reimagine and revamp Duolingo courses in China, focusing on how
we teach English. As a member of Duolingo’s broader learning sciences group,
you will support our efforts to advance Duolingo’s mission through
research-based practices.

This is an open rank position. We will consider candidates from recent PhD
graduates to more senior candidates with years of work experience. The job
rank will be adjusted accordingly.

This position is based in Beijing, China. If needed, we will sponsor work visa
applications to China for qualified applicants.

Responsibilities:
- Be the overall lead for curriculum and content development for all Duolingo
language learning courses targeted at Chinese speakers
- Work side by side with talented learning experts, designers, engineers, and
product managers to bring research-informed product features to life
- Help design curriculum and specific content for the Duolingo English course
for speakers of Mandarin Chinese
- Help recruit, train, and supervise other language experts developing
Duolingo courses
- Help communicate the science behind Duolingo’s teaching methodology to a
wider audience
- Guide general product development to support best teaching practices in the
app

Requirements:
- PhD in TESOL, linguistics, applied linguistics, English, education, or a
related field
- Experience teaching English and/or developing English language curricula for
Chinese speakers
- Familiarity with the principles of second language acquisition and teaching
- Full professional proficiency in both English and Mandarin Chinese
- At least basic proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English
and Mandarin Chinese, such as Japanese, Korean, French, German, Spanish or
Italian
- Strong training in linguistics and/or language typology
- Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills
- A desire to make the world a better place through technology
- Ability to travel to our Pittsburgh headquarters once every 3 months

Exceptional candidates will have:
- Project management experience
- Experience supervising others, especially remotely
