Description:

The Martí-Franquès Research grants Program at the Rovira i Virgili University
in Tarragona offers 1 doctoral grant in the research group ROLLING - Research
on Language and Linguistics.

We are looking for a candidate with an excellent background in linguistics for
a PhD position in the context of the research grant FFI-2016-80142-P of the
Spanish National Research Plan. The PhD position is funded for 1 year,
renewable annually to complete a thesis in 3 years, with the possibility of an
extra 4th year, to conduct independent research and collaborative research
work.

The research grant FFI-2016-80142-P is framed within the study of the
lexicon-syntax interface and seeks to improve our knowledge about the nature
and sources of variation across patterns of argument structure and event
structure in four different phenomena: (i) unergativity (Perlmutter 1978;
Preminger 2012) and (ii) its relationship to light verb structures (e.g.
Miyagawa 1989; Stroik 2001; Bruening 2015), (iii) cognate object structures
(e.g. MacFarland 1995; Felser & Wanner 2001; Real Puigdollers 2008) and (iv)
constructions with obligatory prepositional complements (e.g. Neleeman 1997).

The dissertation carried out under this program will pursue empirical research
that can take any language as a base, preferably within a contrastive approach
that includes at least English, Spanish, or Catalan. The main aim of the
project should be to include a thorough empirical description and detailed
theoretical analysis of any of the aforementioned phenomena or a combination
thereof within a neoconstructionist framework (Hale & Keyser 1993; Halle &
Marantz 1993; Borer 2005; Ramchand 2008; Marantz 2013, i.a.).

We expect the candidate to actively participate in the creation and
development of two databases, one for constructions with obligatory
prepositional complement in the languages of the world, and a second one for
cognate object constructions in the languages of the world. These two
databases should both serve to establish and analyze syntactic patterns of
argument structure and event structure that should help us formulate theories
of morphosyntactic variation in these areas. This project thus pursues a
double goal, theoretical and empirical that seeks (a) to test the validity of
existing theoretical hypotheses and, (b) to describe and analyze empirical
evidence in these areas.

Requirements:
- A research Master’s degree in (theoretical) linguistics
- Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English;
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a heterogeneous team;
- Sound knowledge of (a) less familiar language(s) is a strong advantage.
- Knowledge of Catalan or Spanish is an asset.

The following documentation must be uploaded electronically:
- Photocopy of identity card, resident's card or passport currently in force.
- Curriculum Vitae
- Certificate of the official academic qualification that allows the holder to
access doctoral studies.
- Academic transcript of the undergraduate degree issued in one of the
following languages: Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Italian or Portuguese.
- Academic transcript of the master's degree issued in one of the following
languages: Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Italian or Portuguese.
- Declaration of equivalence
