Description:

The Research Unit “Emerging Grammars in Language Contact Situations: A
Comparative Approach” (RUEG; FOR 2537) invites applications for 2 eight-month
postdoctoral fellowships in the field of heritage languages within the
framework of the Research Unit’s overall research approach.

The stipends will start on 1 January 2020. Researchers will be based at one of
the German universities with RUEG projects: one in the North (Berlin or
Potsdam) and one in the South (Kaiserslautern, Mannheim or Stuttgart).

The Research Unit RUEG:
RUEG investigates the linguistic systems and linguistic resources of heritage
speakers in both of their languages across different language pairs,
registers, and age groups. Research is planned for two phases of 3 years each,
April 2018-March 2021 (current phase) and April 2021-March 2024 (second phase,
pending funding). In the current phase, we are investigating adolescent and
adult heritage speakers of Russian, Turkish, and Greek in Germany and the
U.S., in addition to German as a heritage language in the U.S., as well as
monolingual controls for majority and heritage languages. The next phase might
also include language contact in children, and additional, typologically
different languages.

The Research Unit provides an exciting infrastructure including an
interdisciplinary network of researchers; currently, RUEG encompasses 8
projects at 5 universities (Humboldt Universität Berlin, Technische
Universität Kaiserslautern, Universität Mannheim, Universität Potsdam,
Universität Stuttgart) and the ZAS-Leibniz Institute (Leibniz-Zentrum
Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft).

Goal of the Postdoc Fellowships:
Fellows are expected to develop independent research proposals that pertain to
the Research Unit and that will allow them to be involved as PIs in the
planned second 3-year-phase of the Research Unit.

Postdoctoral fellows choose one of the RUEG sites as their base, where they
will be provided with office space, lab access, and full benefits of mentoring
and coaching opportunities offered by local career advancement programs or
graduate schools. They will be full members of RUEG with access to funding for
conference visits, networking, and pilot studies.

Qualifications:
Applicants should hold a PhD degree in linguistics and have proven research
interests in one or more of the following fields: heritage languages, language
contact, bilingualism, language acquisition, language structure (morphology,
syntax, phonology), linguistic architecture. Applicants should be interested
in collaborative, interdisciplinary work.
