Call Deadline: 15-May-2019

Meeting Description:

We are pleased to announce an interdisciplinary conference on the topic
‘Chinese Indonesians: Identities and Histories‘, to take place in the Learning
and Teaching Building, Monash University Clayton Campus.

This conference will explore the following key questions:

Have recent developments in identity politics and populism in Indonesia and
globally, affected common understandings of race and ethnicity in place since
the colonial period? If so, how? If not, why not?

Two decades after the fall of the New Order, has there been a shift in the
dynamics of racial politics among the diverse networks or communities of
Chinese Indonesians, and between members of such communities with the broader
mix of people? If so, in what ways?
What are some of the new features or trends in the studies of Chinese
Indonesians, and how do they compare to recent studies of ethnic minorities
elsewhere?

What have been the new discoveries in the field in the past 30 years or so?
What research questions have been raised? Why have they been asked in some
areas and not in others?

We are also delighted to announce that the keynote lectures will be given by
Dr Karen Strassler, Associate Professor of Anthropology, Queens College and
CUNY Graduate Center, USA and Dr Hilmar Farid, Director General of Culture,
Ministry of Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia.

Call for Papers:

We invite Paper and Panel submissions from a wide variety of disciplines
including Anthropology, Architecture, Diaspora, Economics, Gender, History,
Human Rights, Language & Literature, Media, Performing Arts, Politics,

The conference also invites submissions for a series of Roundtable Discussions
on selected topics of special interest bringing together both academic and
non-academic participants.
