The Linguist's Workshop: Data, Theory, Experimental Testing

Host Institution: Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Paris, France
Coordinating Institution: Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU)
Website: http://www.uik.eus/en/linguists-workshop-data-theory-experimental-testing

Dates: 08-Jul-2019 - 09-Jul-2019
Location: Donostia/San Sebastian, Gipuzkoa, Spain

Focus: The course is intended as a practical exercise in scientific research, geared towards masters and doctoral students as well as academic professionals interested in developing their own research project in the experimental area or in linguistic documentation. The course is organized on the basis of three basic themes: (i) Language Documentation for Linguistic Theory; (ii) Linguistic Variation and Linguistic Theory; (iii) Aproaching Experimental Linguistics as a tool for pursuing theoretical questions.
Minimum Education Level: Undergraduate

Special Qualifications:
The course is suited for masters and doctoral students as well as for undergraduate students acquainted with linguistic theory (basic knowledge of formal linguistics)

Description:
This course proposal has two objectives. First, it aims at critically
reviewing the notion of "parameter" and the formal means by which variation
can be accounted for in a biolinguistics framework, understood as the
interdisciplinary area defined by the joint contributions of linguistic theory
and advances in biology, the neurosciences, psycholinguistics, computational
modeling and genetics. Second, the course presents a synthetic and up-to-date
review of the practical and theoretical issues involving the processes of data
collection, hypothesis formation and experimental testing of scientific
hypotheses in the context of linguistic research.

The participants will benefit from a two-day course led by six internationally
known experts in the different areas involved: Angel Gallego (Universitat
Autonoma de Barcelona), Leticia Pablos (Leiden University), Maria Polinsky
(University of Maryland), Ian Roberts (Cambridge UNiversity), Douglas Saddy
(University of Reading), and Juan Uriagereka (University of Maryland).

Posters from young researchers (graduate students, postdocs) are welcome in
relation to any of the areas covered by the workshop. The proposals selected
will be exempted from the registration fee. The deadline for the submission of
poster proposals is the 03/06/2019. Poster proposals should be 1 page maximum,
11p font, including examples and/or tables. Proposals should be sent to the
