 Institution/Organization: Sorbonne nouvelle University
Department:

Level: PhD

Duties: Research,Project Work

Specialty Areas: Text/Corpus Linguistics
Cognitive Linguistics, Computational Linguistics

Description:

PhD position in Linguistics, 3 years scholarship starting in autumn 2019,
located in Paris, France
Scientific context. The PhD will be part of the ANR (French National Research
Agency) project Pro-TEXT: Processes of Textualization: Linguistic,
Psycholinguistic, and Machine Learning Modeling. This project aims at
elucidating the dynamics of the textualization process by modeling relations
between the temporal indices of cognitive processes and the linguistic forms
produced in keylogged writing. More specifically, we conduct an innovative
interdisciplinary research on the recurrent features of bursts of writing.
Bursts are linguistic sequences produced between two pauses, e.g.: [pause] a
cousine who [pause]. We use an inductive approach combining multi-parametric
linguistic and behavioral data with machine learning. For a more extended
presentation see https://journals.openedition.org/corpus/2846

Requirements: Candidates should hold a Master's degree in linguistics or
related field by the date of employment. The successful candidate will carry
out empirical work in the field of linguistics. Expertise in linguistics is
required; we also expect strong interest in natural language processing.
Working language: French. Fluency in English will be highly appreciated.

PhD program:
Step 1: Collaborative work (with the project team) on the analysis and
annotation of bursts of writing.
Step 2: Linguistic categorization of bursts - morpho-syntactical structure,
functionality - according to their fixedness and schematicity/phraseological
status, and eventually in comparison with speech data.
Step 3: Identification of the correlation between bursts (or families of
bursts). Correlations between bursts will also be calculated in order to
observe if a specific burst (or family of bursts) is preferentially used with
some other burst (or family of bursts) in the same context. This calculation
could give rise to significant constellations.
Step 4: Identification of the relationship between bursts (or families of
bursts) and textual location.
We will investigate the topological location of bursts in the text: do some
bursts tend to appear at the beginning / end of a paragraph, or a sentence? It
can be assumed that a relationship exists between certain functions of bursts
and the textual organization.

The PhD student will be part of the team of linguistic research based at
Clesthia lab, Sorbonne nouvelle University (Paris, France), but also
collaborate with researchers in psycholinguistics and artificial intelligence
from the other project-teams.

PhD duration: 36 months.
PhD starting: autumn 2019.
