Department: Linguistics
Job Location: Konstanz, Germany
Web Address: https://www.ling.uni-konstanz.de/en/
Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Pragmatics; Semantics

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Konstanz invites
applications for a one-year postdoctoral research position in semantics and
pragmatics. The successful candidate will work on the project Parenthetical
Meaning, directed by Dr. Todor Koev and funded by the DFG (project #: KO
5704/1-1). The primary responsibility of the postdoc will be to conduct
research on the project topic, while at the same time complementing and
further developing their own research program. Although this is primarily a
research position, it might also involve small organizational or teaching
duties. Regular participation in departmental scientific activities (such as
weekly colloquia) is expected.

Project Summary:
Parentheticals constitute a large and diverse class of expressions that are
divorced from the regular truth-conditions of the sentence but interact with
it and the larger discourse in various ways.

This project investigates parenthetical meaning from the following three
theoretical viewpoints:
- The scopal properties of parentheticals, i.e. the ways parenthetical content
interacts with operators placed elsewhere in the sentence;
- The information status of parenthetical meaning, especially when compared to
the regular assertion of the sentence;
- The role of parentheticals as illocutionary modifiers.

Requirements:

The successful applicant will have a strong background in at least two of the
following areas:
- Formal semantics/pragmatics
- Experimental semantics/pragmatics
- Crosslinguistic semantics
- Formal tools: logic, probability, game/decision theory

Application Details:
The deadline of application is June 30, 2019, but the search will continue
until the position is filled.

The application file must include the following materials:
- CV
- Research statement
- Three samples of research

For full consideration, please arrange for three letters of reference to be
sent directly to the application email below by the indicated deadline. Please
send your application as a single file, using the subject line Postdoc Parent.

Job Details:
The position will start on September 1, 2019 or shortly thereafter, and will
continue for the duration of one year. The applicant should have defended and
filed their PhD thesis by the starting date. The salary scale is 13 TV-L/100%,
or approximately EUR 2,500 net pay per month (the actual figure may vary
depending on past experience). The project has additional funding for
attending international workshops and conferences.

Application Deadline: 30-Jun-2019 (Open until filled)
