Linguistic Field(s): Anthropological Linguistics; Discourse Analysis; Ling & Literature; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 15-Mar-2020

Meeting Description:

All contributions that reflect on identity transition based on migration from
or towards the South, from very diverse disciplines and times will be
welcomed, including cultural, filmic, artistic or literary studies, as well as
linguistic, philosophical or historical studies that address how the migrant
fact has been understood by emigrant and immigrant people, emphasising the
links between Spain, Europe, Africa and America. Because of the many different
disciplinary perspectives that can be chosen to study migratory transitions,
two main themes are proposed:

THEME 1: VOICE AND EXPERIENCE OF THE MIGRANT
Migrants could sometimes be recognized as “nobodies” or “borderlanders” in
Galeano’s words – also referred to by Gloria Anzaldúa – or as “cross-cultural
coyotes”, who are singled out by Gómez Peña in the context of the Mexican
border. That is, a subaltern subject born from the blending of two cultures
that influence them equally, a representative of a borderland identity which
corresponds neither to their ancestors’ nor their immediate surroundings.
Subjects who are lost between homesickness and the footprints they cannot
leave behind.

In this sense, we welcome abstracts that tackle topics such as:

- Representations, myths, and images of migration in literature and other arts
- Experiences of exile and diaspora, translation, and migratory editorial
practices, and cultural and artistic management of migratory otherness.
- Linguistic and cultural identity of the migrant: language contact,
bilingualism, and diglossia.
- Linguistic attitudes, ideologies, and politics beyond the border.
- Spanish and European outlooks from both sides of the frontier.
- Feminism and migratory queer studies.

LÍNEA 2: BORDERLINE PERSPECTIVES
The border, seen as a “division” of space always means an adjustment of
crosses and marks on a map that have an effect on people’s lives. In this
case, we are interested in visions of the Southern frontier as a collision
space. Because of this, all the contributions that analyse the frontier’s role
from different spaces and points of view will be integrated within this theme.

The following themes are proposed, as guidance lines:

- Linguistic and cultural representations of the Strait of Gibraltar and
Europe’s Southern border
- Politics of the migrant space: Cities, ghettos, slums and suburbs.
- The big frontier. Censorships and bans of the cultural migrant subject:
publishing industry and racial, cultural and linguistic diversity.
- Visions and attitudes towards migration. Immigration policies and cultural
reactions to them.
- Ecocritical visions of the border. Natural and political borders.

Call for Papers:

Participants will be notified whether their proposal is accepted before May 1,
2020. All speakers must register online before June 1, 2020. To submit your
abstract, please follow this link

Anyone interested in the conference topics is welcomed. All proposals will be
read and evaluated by the organizing and academic committees. The selection
process will consider the interest of the proposal’s topic as well as its
adjustment to the Congress thematic line, its quality and the pertinence of
the methodology used. In case your proposal is admitted, firstly speakers will
have to confirm their assistance and secondly apply as communicators paying
the applicable fees.
