Job Title: Lecturer, Computational Linguistics

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Natural Language Processing

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at The University of British Columbia
(Vancouver) invites applications for a Lecturer position in Computational
Linguistics commencing as soon as January 1, 2020.

This is a full-time position for a term of up to three years, which entails a
probationary first year. Lecturer positions are appointments without review
(i.e. non-tenure track), renewable for successive terms, subject to
availability of funds and demonstration of excellence in teaching and service,
in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty
Association. The workload for the Lecturer position includes teaching plus
service.

A full-time Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts is responsible for 24 teaching
credits (i.e., eight 3-credit courses) and service assignments, based on a 3-3
load in the Winter sessions and 2 courses in the Summer sessions. In cases
where extraordinary additional administrative responsibilities are assigned by
the Head, a 3-credit teaching reduction may be granted. For the 2019-2020
year, this position is expected to support the Master of Data Science in
Computational Linguistics program by working with course instructors to
prepare lab and lecture materials as well as homework assignments and other
evaluation tools, provide lab instruction for a number of courses in the two
winter terms, mentoring students in the capstone final industry project
course. The Lecturer is also expected to teach at least one undergraduate
course in Computational Linguistics.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Linguistics or a closely related field, and
are expected to demonstrate a record of or strong potential for high-quality
teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. They should have experience
building computational models of natural language using Python, and have
experience running programming labs or other hands-on seminars. Significant
experience building neural network models, serving as a class instructor, or
creating curriculum relevant to computational linguistics would all be major
assets for this position. Multidisciplinary experience (i.e. teaching or
research involving more than one department) would also be very desirable.
Training and experience in computer-assisted teaching, community-based
learning, student-centered learning, task-based instruction, and curriculum
development is an asset. The successful candidates will be expected to
maintain an excellent record of teaching, active engagement in professional
development and curriculum design/development of teaching materials, as well
as fully participate in department affairs and service.

To apply, please see the application link provided below.

Review of applications will begin soon after November 11, 2019 and will
continue until the position is filled.

This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience.
