Description:

The Linguistics section of the Department of Linguistics and Philology at
Uppsala University is seeking a doctoral student for a fully funded PhD
position. Members of our section have a broadly empirical approach, and study
topics ranging from language acquisition and second language learning to
language description, areal typology and phylogenetic linguistics. The
proposed doctoral project should fall within the supervisory scope available
in the subject area, and its final form will be determined in consultation
with the advisor. Applicants should discuss their proposed research with a
potential supervisor before submission. Our research is described at
https://www.lingfil.uu.se/research/linguistics/

Requirements:
To qualify for a doctoral position in Linguistics a candidate should hold an
advanced degree fulfilling the requirements for a master’s degree in
Linguistics, or the equivalent. The scope and quality of the candidate’s
independent work will play a major role in selection, as will the quality and
orientation of the thesis plan. An additional requirement is well-documented
ability in written and spoken English or Swedish.

Application:
The application should contain:
- A letter of intent describing your research interests and motivation for PhD
studies (maximum one page)
- A CV containing (i) a description of your education in linguistics and other
relevant areas, (ii) a list of academic results, (iii) professional experience
relevant to academic research, and (iv) relevant technical skills (maximum
three pages)
- An authorized copy of your MA degree (or equivalent)
- A copy of your master’s thesis (or equivalent)
- An eight-page sample of your written academic English (from publications or
previously submitted academic coursework)
- A sample research proposal which (i) states a research question, (ii)
describes the methodology and work plan, and (iii) contextualises the expected
results in relation to the state of the art. The actual dissertation project
of the successful candidate will be worked out in collaboration with the
supervisor (four pages including references)
- Other documents which the applicant would like to adduce.

The application may be written in Swedish or English.
