Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Alberta invites
applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Indigenous Language
Sustainability (ILS). This full time appointment is effective July 1, 2020.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Linguistics or an allied field and have
experience with fieldwork and community-based documentation or ethnography of
Indigenous languages, preferably in the languages of the Americas. Applicants
must demonstrate evidence of peer-reviewed scholarly publications and relevant
teaching. The successful candidate’s research could include, but is not
limited to, Indigenous/endangered language documentation, the sociocultural
dynamics of language and language revitalization, and/or development of
technologies in support of endangered language sustainability.

The Department seeks candidates with extensive background in and knowledge of
issues pertaining to Indigenous peoples, and experience with community-engaged
research working with Indigenous communities. Successful candidates will be
expected to develop an innovative externally-funded research program,
supervise and mentor graduate students, and provide service to the Department,
Faculty, University, and discipline. The successful candidate will also be
expected to offer courses in linguistics at both the undergraduate and
graduate levels, including courses in an area of specialization and
ILS-related subfields. Qualified applicants from endangered language
communities and/or speakers of languages indigenous to the Americas are
especially encouraged to apply.
