Description:

Applications and enquiries are invited from qualified and motivated students
wishing to pursue a PhD degree within an ARC Discovery Project examining the
word as a theoretical construct: “1 potato, 2 wotatoes, 3 otatoes: Lexical
access in Australian languages” The project involves researchers from Western
Sydney University, University of Melbourne, and University of Newcastle. 

The ARC project focuses on three languages of northern Australia: Iwaidja,
Mawng, Ritharrngu. The PhD project is to produce an overall grammatical
description of Iwaidja, which is a non-Pama-Nyungan language with a complex
morphophonology. The PhD project involves fieldwork, and participation in
experimental design and data collection.

Do you have an interest in evaluating and developing theories of the word and
how people access and process words? Do you have an interest in language
documentation and description?
The PhD offers an opportunity to develop your interests in language
documentation and description, in quantitative analysis, and in evaluation of
theories. The successful candidate will join an energetic team whose combined
expertise covers all of these research areas, and who can offer you training
to boost your current levels of knowledge in these areas. The principal
supervisor is A/Prof Robert Mailhammer.

We welcome applicants from a range of backgrounds, who are keen to apply their
skills to linguistic analysis, field work and experimental linguistics. In
particular, the project is suitable for candidates with strong interests in
field linguistics and language documentation as well as phonetics and
phonology.

The successful applicant should:
- Hold qualifications and experience equal to one of the following (i) an
Australian First Class Bachelor (Honours) degree, (ii) coursework Masters with
at least 25% research component, (iii) Research Masters degree, or (iv)
equivalent overseas qualifications.
- Demonstrate strong academic performance in linguistics, especially field
linguistics.
- Have an understanding of the importance of linguistic fieldwork.
- Be willing to learn experimental approaches in language description,
especially in phonetics/phonology and psycholinguistics.
- Be enthusiastic and highly motivated to undertake further study at an
advanced level.
International applicants must also meet English language proficiency
standards.
