Description:

The University of Duisburg-Essen, Department of Anglophone Studies invites
applications for a position of a postdoctoral fellow with expertise in
variationist sociolinguistics. 

This is a fixed term (3 years) full time position which has arisen as part of
the German research foundation funded (DFG) research project “Tracing Language
Variation and Change across the Life Span“, which examines the mechanisms of
intra-speaker (in)stability. The successful candidate will be expected to work
closely with Prof. Isabelle Buchstaller and the team at the Sociolab in the
collection of data in the North East of England and the statistical analysis
of results. We are looking for an individual with a strong background in
sociophonetics who has experience in data processing and data management. The
fellow will publish independent research as well as collaborate with members
of the team in writing joint publications resulting from ongoing research. 

The annual salary is based on spine point TV-L 13 (100 % FTA) on the German
university salary scale. 

To apply:
The ideal candidate has a strong background in empirical methods for
linguistic analysis and an interest in exploring language change processes,
both experimentally and theoretically. The postdoctoral researcher should have
expertise in empirical sociolinguistic research, ideally in the context of
Northern British Englishes. They hold a PhD in Variationist Sociolinguistics,
Sociophonetics or Computational Linguistics with a good publication record.
Expertise in quantitative methods and managing research grants are required,
together with experience in conducting field research. Familiarity with
computer programming is desirable. No knowledge of German is required.

the dissertation or academic papers).
