The Symposium on West African Languages (SyWAL) is a biennial international

African languages spoken in West Africa and West African languages used
elsewhere.

The first edition of the Symposium (SyWAL2014) was hosted in Naples by
Dipartimento di Asia, Africa e Mediterraneo, Università di Napoli
“L’Orientale”, the second edition (SyWAL2016) was held at the Institut für
Afrikawissenschaften, Universität Wien, and the the third edition (SyWAL2018)
was organized in Poland by Katedra Języków i Kultur Afryki Uniwersytetu
Warszawskiego. The 4th Symposium on West African Languages (SyWAL2020) will
take place at the Dipartimento di Asia, Africa e Mediterraneo, Università di
Napoli “L’Orientale”, on the 23rd, 24th and 25th of September 2020. The theme
of the 2020 conference is ‘Uniformity, Variability, Diversity’.

Call for Panels:

We invite panel proposals related (but not limited) to the following research
areas: language description, language documentation, typology and comparative
linguistics, sociolinguistics, contact phenomena, cultural linguistics,
computational linguistics, gestures and sign languages, discursive variants
and language registers. Although proposals that resonate with the SyWAL2020
theme ‘Uniformity, Variability, Diversity’ will be especially welcome,
proposals may be on any topic relevant to the Symposium.

Proposals for themed panel sessions can be either for single sessions (90
minutes/3 presentations or 120 minutes/4 presentations) or double sessions
(90/120 minutes x 2). Proposals should include: (1) title of the panel, (2)
Name and affiliation (if any) of the proponent, (3) outline (300 words max),
and (4) outline of the full planned proceedings (this may include specific
speakers/titles for talks, or intended profiles of who/what is to be included,
and whether you plan to do a public call for papers). Panel convenors will be
fully responsible for ensuring quality through the appropriate process of
review, selection, and for organization of constituent paper presentations.
Themed panel proposals will not go through the EasyChair review procedure that
the stand-alone SyWAL2020 papers will go through. Proposals must be made in
English (the language of the conference). Decisions on the panel proposals
will be made by the Scientific Committee and these will be communicated to all
proposing convenors by the 15th of December.
