Description:

The University of Pittsburgh Department of Linguistics invites applications
for the position of Assistant Professor (tenure-track), specializing in
computational sociolinguistics, beginning September 1, 2020.

Essential qualifications include:
- PhD in Linguistics or an allied field such as computer science or
anthropology at the time of appointment;
- A research program, evidenced by a strong publication record, featuring the
central use of computational/machine learning approaches to sociolinguistics
(including subfields of interaction/discourse analysis, pragmatics, variation
and change, language attitudes);
- Ability to teach one or more of the following courses: computational
linguistics, natural language processing, linguistic data science, corpus
linguistics, variationist sociolinguistics, discourse analysis;
- Evidence of an ability to work across disciplinary lines.

Desired qualifications -- applicants with one or more of the following will be
ranked more highly:
- Experience with data-intensive and quantitative methods
- Experience working with both structured and unstructured data;
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching in higher education;
- Ability to teach one or more of the following courses at the undergraduate
or graduate level: introduction to linguistics, phonetics, phonology,
morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics;
- Evidence of a critical perspective in research and teaching;
- Experience with involvement in industry partnerships;
- Research interests in languages other than English, especially Spanish or
Arabic.

build on our current strengths. The position is part of the "Machine Learning
Hub" series of hires coordinated with six departments across the Dietrich
