Description:

The Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African
Languages at Michigan State University seeks a tenure-track Assistant
Professor in Sociolinguistics with a focus on language variation and change,
starting August 16, 2020.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in Linguistics by time of
appointment, and (near-)native English language proficiency. The candidate
should have a record of high quality research in sociolinguistics
(publications or presentations), and a promising trajectory of scholarly
engagement.

Special consideration will be given to candidates whose scholarly interests
complement and connect with those of our faculty. Applicants who engage in
experimental/computational approaches to modeling and analysis of sound change
and variation are particularly encouraged. The ability to teach phonology,
quantitative methods, or introduction to cognitive science is desirable, as is
some college-level teaching experience. Research in languages other than
English is a plus.
Duties will include active research, teaching, and service.

The normal teaching load is two courses per semester. The successful candidate
is expected to a) teach sociolinguistics, plus undergraduate and graduate
courses in their areas of expertise, as well as in Integrative Studies in the
Arts and Humanities, b) maintain an active research program, including in the
MSU Sociolinguistics Lab c) supervise theses/dissertations and mentor graduate
and undergraduate students, and d) engage in institutional and professional
service.
