One of the main goals of the OED’s ambitious revision project is widening the
geographical coverage of the dictionary.

This is in recognition of the fundamental changes that the English-speaking
world has undergone since the OED was first conceived: the emerging language
communities of the 19th century now speak established varieties of English
that are developing their own standards of grammar, pronunciation, and lexis.

As part of this project, in January 2020 29 Nigerian English words were added
to the OED, joining several others that have made it into the dictionary over
the years.
In addition, early research conducted among our academic audience has
indicated that researchers would like more coverage of World Englishes, and we
are now working to understand more about this need.

Join Dr Danica Salazar, World English Editor for Oxford Languages at Oxford
University Press, and Mr Kingsley Ugwuanyi, Lecturer/Doctoral Researcher at
Northumbria University and one of OUP’s Nigerian English consultants, for a
live online session where they will cover:

- The Nigerian English update: the collection of content and the process of
assessing it
- Some interesting findings
- What other World Englishes we are looking into: the rationale behind
targeting particular varieties
- Applications of World Englishes in research
- How researchers can get involved
- Q&A – bring your questions to the panellists or send them in advance to
oed.uk(at)oup.com

Who is this for?
- Researchers with an interest in World Englishes
- Lexicographers
- Speakers of Nigerian English and other World English varieties
- Anyone interested in learning how regional varieties of English are
documented in the OED
