Subject: Call for book chapters: Children, adolescents and World Englishes: Rethinking paradigms and approaches

We aim to bring together researchers working on the language of children and
adolescents within a World Englishes paradigm, but we also encourage scholars
researching these groups in migrant communities in L1 contexts (such as Canada
or Australia) to contribute. Authors should address at least one of the two
following aspects in their papers, ideally both:
- the theoretical implications that a joint approach between World Englishes,
sociolinguistics and language acquisition has (i.e. why is a joint approach
fruitful and how can it contribute to a better and deeper understanding of the
different research paradigms) and
- which methods of collecting and analysing children’s and/or adolescents’
linguistic data have been adopted and/or adapted in the World Englishes
context.

The range of topics may include, but is not limited to the following areas:
- first and second language acquisition
- sociolinguistic variation and awareness
- language use and choice
- family language policies (cf. King et al. 2008)
- methodologies of eliciting speech and writing from children and adolescents
- child-directed speech
- language attitudes and perception
- modelling children’s and adolescents’ language in World Englishes
- the role of child language acquisition in processes of language change
Depending on the number of abstracts received, we plan to submit a proposal
for either an edited volume or special issue of a journal of a high quality
publisher. Please send an email stating your interest and a provisional
chapter title until 7 May 2020 to Thorsten.Brato at ur.de. Please submit your
abstract of 500 words (excluding references) by 31 May 2020.
