About the position:
The Faculty of Humanities, Sports and Educational Science has a vacancy for a
position as PhD Research Fellow in Linguistics at the Department of Languages
and Literature Studies from 01.08.2021. The position is affiliated with the
research group Language Variation and Change in Society and Education, which
includes both experienced researchers and other research fellows:

The position reports to the Head of Department, Jørn Boisen. The place of
employment can be either Drammen, Vestfold, Notodden, Porsgrunn or Bø and 
will be decided  in agreement with the appointed candidate. The appointment is
for a period of four years with 25% teaching duties, alternatively for a
period of three years without teaching duties. The appointment term will be
decided during the recruitment process, and will run from the date of
employment.

Information about the position:
The project may encompass language and linguistic practices in a wide sense,
including sociolinguistic, cognitive, discursive, didactic and historical
approaches. The project may focus on language throughout the education system,
linguistic processes of change on the societal and individual levels, and in
different learning contexts.

Relevant topics may be, but are not limited to, the following:
- Multilingualism and Norwegian as a second language in the education system
(such as new and old multilingualism, acquisition and management of
multilingual competence, Norwegian minority languages, Sami languages)
- Language variation and change (such as the dual Norwegian system of written
language, variation between written and spoken language, youth language,
corpus analysis)
- Sociolinguistics (such as normativity, standardization, language attitudes,
language ideology)
- Forensic linguistics (such as plain language, author identification,
contrastive analysis, institutional conversations)

In the application letter, applicants are encouraged to name a member of the
research group Language Variation and Change in Society and Education as a
potential supervisor.

The research group which the candidate will be part of will facilitate
national and international cooperation (e.g. with MultiLing Center for
Multilingualism at the University of Oslo), and The candidate will be able to
take part in ongoing projects in the research group. Furthermore, the group
has broad methodological experience with a variety of fieldwork, data
collection and data processing methods, both qualitative and quantitative.

Qualifications:
Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree (120 credits) or
equivalent higher education qualifications, preferably within linguistics,
Nordic, Norwegian, English and/or Norwegian or general language didactics. A
degree with a pedagogical or social sciences focus may also be relevant. The
applicant must have completed the degree by the application deadline, and must
normally have obtained a B or better grade.
