Job Title: Consultant for Language Proficiency Test Design
Job Rank: Consultant

Specialty Areas: Clinical Linguistics; Language Acquisition; Language Documentation

Description:

Ideal Candidate:

This consulting role will be responsible for designing a scalable framework
for auto-scored bilingual proficiency assessments and building out a full
assessment test in one or more target languages. Beginning with Medical
Spanish and Medical English, the framework will be applied to more than a
dozen frequently encountered language versions. The test will assess language
use for medical purposes primarily in the competency domains of listening and
speaking. Drawing from our large corpus of patient-provider communication
scenarios and healthcare-related dialogs, you will apply your expertise in
proficiency assessment to develop the framework, validity argument, test
items, and item specifications, field test plan, the score report, and
analyses for test-takers, psychometric reports, etc.
The ideal candidate will have completed similar projects at an educational
technology company, language services provider, or multilingual publishing or
content development organization. Either as the project lead or key
contributing member, you were instrumental in developing a language fluency
test for special purposes in one or more target languages. Experience with
healthcare is a significant advantage but not required. Fluency in a second
language (especially Spanish) is also desirable but not required. Knowledge
of machine grading of these proficiency tests is also desirable but not
required.

This is a consulting engagement and may lead to a full-time position for the
right candidate. Although proximity to our Nashville TN or New York City
offices is preferred, the consultant may perform his/her work from any U.S.
location.

Qualifications:

- Master’s or PhD degree in Applied Linguistics, Educational Linguistics,
Psychology or related discipline, with a focus on second language acquisition
or language proficiency assessment/testing and research.
- Familiarity with established fluency scales (e.g., ACTFL, ILR, CEFR) and
with current research in the related fields.
- Expert command of test development principles, psychometrics, validity and
reliability, and fairness of tests.
- Multiple prior project experiences with large-scale standardized language
test development and research, or developing language assessment instruments
as part of a language teaching program, for professional users in specialized
contexts.
- Experience utilizing statistical techniques to design and evaluate test
content (e.g., content validity, item reliability, appropriate item difficulty
design for parallel test forms, etc.).
- Experience designing solutions for automated analysis of open-ended written
and/or verbal responses.
- Excellent skills in writing technical test manuals, analysis and feedback
for test-takers, and research reports.
- Familiarity with language access operations in healthcare a plus
