Subject: Forensic linguistics between scientific research and legal practice (workshop)

Full Title: Forensic linguistics between scientific research and legal practice (workshop)

Date: 10-Sep-2020 - 10-Sep-2020
Location: Florence, Italy
Contact Person: Chiara Meluzzi
Meeting Email: chmeluzzi at gmail.com

Linguistic Field(s): Forensic Linguistics; Phonetics; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Call Deadline: 20-Feb-2020

Meeting Description:

Research in forensic linguistics shows nowadays a renewed interest, by
promoting a positive integration between juridical practices and scientific
investigation instruments. However, some problematic issues remain unsolved,
among which are the lack of guidelines or standardized methodologies and the
absence of rules concerning the creation of professional profiles in the role
of forensic consultants. Inspired by the positive models and the best
practices adopted by other research institutes (e.g., Netherlands Forensic
Institute or Swedish National Forensic Centre), this workshop aims at favoring
exchanges and share of knowledge in this field not only on the scientific
aspects of forensics but also on their legal applications in the perspective
of a strong interdisciplinary collaboration.

The interdisciplinary workshop will take place within the annual conference of
the Società di Linguistica Italiana (SLI: https://www.sli2020.unifi.it/) in
the wonderful city of Florence.
Participants will be invited to participate in a workshop social dinner on the
night of the 9th September, and to submit a full paper for publication either
in a journal special issue or as book chapters (further information will be
available before the conference).

Invited speakers:
Peter French (Università di York, J P French Associates)
Veronica Scotti (Politecnico di Milano – Legal Consultant)

Scientific committee:
Silvia Calamai, Chiara Celata, Sonia Cenceschi, Volker Dellwo, Peter French,
Barbara Gili Fivela, Chiara Meluzzi, Elisa Pellegrino, Luciano Romito.

Call for Papers:

This workshop will aim at creating a network of both linguists and lawyers
dealing with forensic issues. For this reason, the workshop has a strong
interdisciplinary nature and contributions are invited from any field of
linguistics with applications to forensics.

In particular, we welcome original papers focusing on forensic linguistics
both on the textual and the phonetic aspects of communication. A list of
topics includes but is not limited to the following:
- Analysis of forensic communication (e.g., questioning or trials) or of
textual materials used in court (e.g., last wills, SMS, letters, etc.)
- The use of speech corpora and of corpus linguistics in forensics
- Shared methodologies and procedures in the audio processing and in the
analysis of speech and text in forensics
- Proposals of new inter-linguistic methodologies for the analysis of forensic
data
- Discussion of actual law cases involving speech and text experts in
courtroom
- The relationship and partnership between speech and text experts and law
institutions: methods, needs, problems and possible solutions

Proposals could be written either in Italian or in English. Abstracts should
not exceed 1000 words (excluding references), and two total pages, including
examples, images, tables and references. The references should be in APA and
in alphabetical order.

Proposals should be sent by 20 February 2020 to the following email address:
workshopforensicSLI at gmail.com in both .pdf and .doc format.

Each abstract will be anonymously reviewed and evaluated by 2 members of the
workshop scientific committee.
Each invited speaker will be allowed 30’ of speech and 10’ of discussion,
whereas selected communications will be allowed 15’ of talk and 5’ of
discussion.

Both invited and selected speakers will be invited to submit a full paper
after the conference, for publication as a special issue in a top-rank
journal. Deadline and modalities of submissions as well as the selected
journal will be communicated during the workshop.

Important dates:
20 February 2020: abstract submission deadline
20 April 2020: notification of acceptance
1 June 2020: preliminary program
1 July 2020: final program and participants’ information
