Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Linguistic Theories; Sociolinguistics; Syntax

Call Deadline: 01-May-2020

Meeting Description:

As stated almost a century ago, “[e]veryone knows that language is variable”
(Sapir 1921, p. 147). Since then the study of language variation has witnessed
significant development in a variety of linguistic fields. The central theme of
this conference is language variation and attitudes, and its aim is to attract
research from the fields of sociolinguistics, linguistic theory, and dialectal
variation. Our goal is to create a forum where scholars working on language
variation and attitudes from different perspectives, and using different and
innovative methodological tools, can exchange ideas and engage in a fruitful
discussion.

Keynote Speakers:
Adrian Leemann (University of Bern)
Roberta D’Alessandro (Utrecht University)
Unn Røyneland (University of Oslo)
Elena Theodorou (Cyprus University of Technology)
Natalia Pavlou (University of Cyprus)

Scholars are invited to submit their proposals on any relevant aspect of
variation in language use and/or the linguistic system. We particularly
welcome papers on the following topics:

-Variation and change in understudied, underdocumented speech communities
-Acquisition of sociolinguistic variation in multilingual, bi(dia)lectal, and
diglossic communities
-Language attitudes and ideologies, and their role in explaining language
variation
-Variation in typical and atypical or impaired language development

The topics listed are not exhaustive and any submission on the conference’s
central theme is welcome.
