Description:

The university-community Partnership “21st Century Tools for Indigenous
Languages”, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of
Canada, seeks applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellowship, from
summer/fall 2020. The appointment is for 2 years, subject to review after the
1st year. Start date is negotiable.

This Partnership is led by the University of Alberta, Linguistics Department’s
Alberta Language Technology Lab, partnering with 13 institutions and
Indigenous language communities and 31 researchers and educators in Canada,
the U.S., and Norway. For further information, see:
https://altlab.artsrn.ualberta.ca/21c/  and http://altlab.artsrn.ualberta.ca

Partnership members have been developing computational models of phonetics,
morphology, lexis, and syntax in Indigenous languages in Canada and North
America, starting with Algonquian and Dene languages, to create software
applications that support their use by speakers and learners. These include
e.g. intelligent electronic dictionaries, spell-checkers, text collections,
and speech synthesizers. The languages we have come furthest with are Plains
Cree (Algonquian) and Tsuut’ina (Dene).

Allowing for variation based on the successful applicant’s competences and
interests, duties will include:

1. participation in/responsibility for:
a. the continued development of our existing computational models and
applications for Algonquian and/or Dene and/or other Indigenous languages we
are already working on; OR
b. the development of new computational models and applications for other
Indigenous languages, preferably spoken in Canada;
2. training and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students (M.A/Ph.D
level) in developing models and applications for Indigenous languages;
3. engaging with Indigenous community consultants in collecting primary
linguistic data and gathering feedback from community members;
4. other administrative responsibilities.

The fellowship offers an annual salary (in CAD) and benefits in line with
SSHRC policy:

ps/postdoctoral-postdoctorale-eng.aspx

may be co-located or based in part at other Partners. We have allocated
dedicated funding for work and travel at multiple locations.

Qualifications:

1. recently completed, or be about to finish, a Ph.D degree in linguistics or
associated relevant discipline
2. specialization in:
a. the documentation and study of Indigenous American languages, with an
interest to learn computational modelling, OR
b. the computational modelling (text and/or speech) of morphologically rich
languages, with an interest to learn the essential morphological and phonetic
characteristics of the languages we are working with.

The application must include:

a. Approx. 2-page research statement outlining past experience and current
research interests, and how these align with and contribute to the goals of
our Partnership
b. Curriculum Vitae (with List of Publications)
c. 1-3 relevant academic writing samples
d. 3 letters of Recommendation sent directly to Project Director, Dr. Antti
Arppe

Applicants should contact Dr. Arppe in advance to discuss their research plan.
 Applications and inquiries should be emailed to Dr. Arppe (email below).
Application review will begin by April 30, 2020 and continue until the
