Call for contributions to an edited volume: Current Perspectives in Spanish
Lexical Development

Editors:
Irene Checa-Garcia (University of Wyoming)
Laura Marqués-Pascual (University of California, Santa Barbara)

The study of the acquisition of a second language (L2) has focused on every
possible area of the linguistic sign and its meaning and context, from
phonetics to syntax to pragmatics, among others. There is one aspect, however
that, despite being central to communication and hence to L2 learning, has
been devoted proportionally less attention than other aspects: the lexicon.
Its vastness and complexity are partly behind this partial omission. However,
new quantitative methodology and the development of corpus and experimental
linguistics tools has meant that researching lexical comprehension and
production is now more accessible. While several online tools and data sets
are available in English (Coh-metrix, CELEX) and a few other languages, the
development of resources for research and empirical research itself is still
lacking in Spanish.

This volume aims to bring together original empirical research and possible
methodologies that examine the lexical development in Spanish in different
populations and learning and acquisition contexts. In doing so, the volume
attempts to offer an overview of what has been done and what needs to be done
given the results obtained. A diversity of contributions are welcome, but we
specially encourage empirical and quantitative proposals that deal with the
following topics applied to the Spanish language:

Measures of lexical development and their validities (e.g. construct,
reliability, conceptual, etc.)
Effect of L1 lexical development on L2 lexical development
Comparisons of methodologies for teaching L2 lexicons
Comparisons of learning contexts for L1 or L2 lexicon acquisition
Comparisons of lexical richness measurements
Comparisons of different groups of speakers and their lexical development (eg.
Native speakers, Heritage Language Learners, L2 Learners, etc.)
Sociolinguistic factors influencing lexical development in L1 or/and L2
Lexical typology and L2 lexicon acquisition
Cross-linguistic contact effects on the lexicon
Interface between lexical development and other aspects of linguistic
development (e.g. morphological, syntactic, pragmatic, etc.)
Acquisition of collocations and multiword expressions
Communication disorders and vocabulary development in L1 or L2
