Special Issue - Early Career Research

We are conscious of the impact that COVID-19, and the cancellation of ICLC
2021, is having on the careers of many colleagues, and of early career
researchers (ECRs) in particular. To mitigate the impact of the pandemic on
careers, the ICLA has decided to devote one issue of its journal, Cognitive
Linguistics (COGL), to work by early career scholars. The Special Issue will
be guest-edited by Professor John Newman, former Editor-in-Chief of COGL.
The Special Issue will have space for 10 contributions. These will be selected
from among the applications we receive by Professor Sherman Wilcox, President
of the ICLA, and Professor Dagmar Divjak, Editor-in-Chief of COGL. The
selection will represent the discipline as broadly as the quality of the
proposals allows. Full manuscripts will undergo the regular double-blind
review process. To help the selected ECRs navigate the publication waters,
mentoring will be provided by senior members of the community, drawn from the
ICLA Board and the COGL editorial team.

For the purpose of this Special Issue, ECRs are defined as scholars who are
within 7 years of obtaining their PhD degree and do not hold a permanent
academic position. Furthermore, applicants should not previously have
published in COGL and should not be submitting a proposal that includes a
senior scholar as co-author. After all, with this initiative we aim to help
those whose careers are most at risk, i.e. those without access to
well-published and well-networked mentors.

If you are interested in participating in this initiative, please express your
interest using this form: https://forms.gle/Y6CxaqZ7pTxeHtXt7
You will be asked to describe, in no more than 100 words per question:
- the topic of your proposed manuscript
- how the topic fits with Cognitive Linguistic theory, i.e. why is it an
important topic to study
- how you will approach the topic, i.e., how you will collect and analyse your
data
- your current/anticipated results
- how your current/anticipated results contribute to Cognitive Linguistic
theory

Deadlines are as follows:
30 September 2020: expression of interest by ECRs
31 October 2020: notification of successful applicants
28 February 2021: submission of manuscripts to COGL
The Special Issue is planned as Issue 1 of 2022.
