Description:

PhD Scholarship: Linguistic and conceptual representations of space in an
Indigenous Australian language

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship to join the OzSpace research
team, within the Australian Research Council funded Discovery Project
'Landscape, language and culture in Indigenous Australia'.

This exciting scholarship opportunity includes an ARC-funded PhD stipend and
associated individual funding, along with field research expenses.
Applications from international and domestic students are welcomed. The
successful applicant will be based at the University of Newcastle (Australia),
under the supervision of OzSpace team leader Associate Professor Bill Palmer.
(Note: this is a separate opportunity to the recently advertised domestic PhD
opportunity at the University of Western Australia to join the same research
team.)

The OzSpace project aims to determine how culture and social diversity
interact with landscape in representing physical space in the minds and
grammars of speakers of Australian Indigenous languages. If successful, you
will join a team of leading senior researchers, postdoctoral fellows and PhD
students. Your research will involve extensive field-based data collection in
one Indigenous Australian community. You will play a central role in the first
Australia-wide large-scale investigation of diversity in spatial description
and behaviour among individuals within Indigenous communities. Your doctoral
research will contribute to the collection and analysis of experimental and
natural data in six Australian Indigenous languages spoken in a range of
geographical environments, and your findings will inform crucial wider debates
on the formative roles of landscape and culture in language and human spatial
cognition.

Applicant profile:
The successful candidate will:
- Hold a good undergraduate Honours or postgraduate degree in linguistics or
an allied discipline.
- Be trained in general linguistics.
- Be prepared to undertake field work in isolated areas.
- Demonstrate a desire to collaborate with Indigenous communities, and an
understanding of respectful, ethical processes in this context.
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and training in one or more of the following
areas:
(1) Field-based descriptive linguistics.
(2) Cognitive linguistics, especially spatial cognition.
(3) Psycholinguistics, including the implementation of linguistic and
non-linguistic data collection methods in experimental conditions.
(4) Semantics, in particular the semantic domain of space.
(5) Quantitative methods and/or statistics.
(6) The linguistics of Australian languages.

The following will be a plus:
- Experience of linguistic field work.
- Experience working with Australian Indigenous communities and/or speakers of
Australian Indigenous languages.

OzSpace Team:
If successful you will join a research team including: A/Prof Bill Palmer
(Newcastle, lead CI); Dr Joe Blythe (Macquarie, CI); A/Prof Alice Gaby
(Monash, CI); Dr Maïa Ponsonnet (Western Australia, CI); Dr Dorothea Hoffmann
(Oregon Eugene/The Language Conservancy, Senior Research Associate); Dr
Margaret Carew (Northern Territory Dep’t Education, Senior Research
Associate); Dr Clair Hill (New South Wales/Newcastle, Senior Research
Associate); Mr Tom Ennever (Monash, PhD researcher); and at a least one other
PhD researcher.

Applications are due in the first instance on 9 October 2020, but the position
will remain open until filled. For more information, please contact at the
contact information provided below. Please email your application to
bill.palmer at newcastle.edu.au, including a CV, academic transcript, example of
your work, and the names and email addresses of two professional referees (we
will contact your referees if you are shortlisted).

Application Deadline: 09-Oct-2020
