Subject: Survey Invitation to All Linguists: ''What Should Everyone Know about Language?''

Dear colleague,

You are hereby invited to participate in a research study entitled "What
should everyone know about language?". Over the years, we have heard many
linguists express their frustration at the general public’s lack of knowledge
regarding language and linguistics.
In this survey, we wish to learn your views on what the public ought to know –
in other words, what are the most important facts about language that, in your
opinion, should constitute part of a person’s general knowledge.

The study is being conducted by Dr. Tomas Lehecka (Åbo Akademi University,
Finland) and Prof. Jan-Ola Östman (University of Helsinki, Finland). It forms
part of a larger, transnational project concerning intuitions and patterns of
thought about language among the general public, funded by the Emil Aaltonen
Foundation and the Society of Swedish Literature.

If you have any questions about the study or the project as a whole, you are
welcome to address them to PI Tomas Lehecka (tomas.lehecka at abo.fi).

The survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete.

By participating, you will be contributing to our understanding of the value
of linguistic knowledge both for individuals and for society at large.
Ultimately, this understanding will enable us to design an informed strategy
to improve public awareness of language-related issues.

All responses will be greatly appreciated!
