Linguistic Field(s): Writing Systems

Meeting Description:

Writing is an utterly multifaceted subject. In reality, systematic,
psycholinguistic, and sociolinguistic factors interact and together shape both
how writing as a modality of language is structured and how it is used (and
how these two aspects affect each other). To reflect this complexity in
interdisciplinary grapholinguistic theory, systematic, psycholinguistic, and
sociolinguistic perspectives need to converge; however, exchange between
scholars from different disciplines and paradigms has been scarce. The
workshop 'Writing: System, use, ideology' seeks to make such an exchange
possible to uncover (new) questions that have yet to be negotiated.

In featuring talks from international experts (Florian Busch, Florian Coulmas,
Peter T. Daniels, Zohar Eviatar, Amalia E. Gnanadesikan, Stefan Hartmann,
Nadja Kerschhofer-Puhalo, Hye K. Pae, Ulrike Sayatz, Roland Schäfer, Jürgen
Spitzmüller, Rebecca Treiman, Heather Winskel, Dimitrios Meletis) that cover
all three mentioned perspectives, a full(er) picture of the study of writing
is expected to emerge. Speakers will present research in their field of
expertise, focusing also on what it can contribute to an overall theory of
writing and indicating possible interfaces with other perspectives. This will
hopefully generate stimulating discussion(s) about the current state and, most
importantly, the future of grapholinguistics and a theory of writing.
