Subject: Student Survey on Character Amnesia in Mandarin Speakers

One of my honors students, Cecilia Lin, is researching character amnesia in
Mandarin speakers, both learned and heritage/native. She has constructed a
short survey (https://forms.gle/M2homUbzXqDkBaaf8) that will take about 5-10
minutes to complete. At this time, she is only looking for those who write
using either Modern or Traditional Chinese Characters, and specifically
looking at those who speak (or have learned to speak) Mandarin. Her message is
below. Please spread this survey as far as you can!

"Hi! I'm Cecilia Lin, and I'm a CSM student writing a honors paper for my
Linguistics 200 class. My topic is on how the proliferation of technological
means of communication has given rise to "Character Amnesia" among Mandarin
speakers. If you are a Mandarin speaker, I'd greatly appreciate your input
here!

‘Character Amnesia’ is a phenomenon when experienced Mandarin speakers forget
how to write characters that were previously well known to them. This is
largely attributed to the rise of technology which has allowed such Mandarin
speakers to ‘write’ characters with phonetic transcriptions on technological
devices instead of the traditional handwritten way. This survey aims to gather
information on history with learning Mandarin and technology usage to better
understand the occurrence of Character Amnesia.

Thank you for filling out the survey!"
