The Faculty of Humanities invites applications for a Research Associate for
the project “The Impact of Public Discourse on Health Care Utilization during
the COVID-19 Pandemic”

- SALARY LEVEL 13 TV-L -

The position in accordance with Section 28 subsection 3 of the Hamburg higher
education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) commences on June 1,
2021.

This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic
fixed-term labor contract act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG).
The term is fixed for a period of two years. The position calls for 65 % of
standard work hours per week*.

Responsibilities:
Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research
associates may also pursue independent research and further academic
qualifications.

Specific Duties:
The primary objective of this project is to examine the relationship between
public discourse on the COVID-19 pandemic and responses by the population
considering policy measures taken to mitigate the pandemic, socioeconomic
factors and political orientation, with a focus on two countries, England and
Germany. The project is a cooperation between the Hamburg Center for Health
Economics and the Department of English. In the position advertised here, you
will assist Prof. Robert Fuchs at the Department of English with the
linguistic analysis of discourse on the COVID-19 pandemic in English and
German print and online media. In particular, you will assist with the
compilation of relevant data, the analysis of word frequencies and
metaphorical usage, statistical modelling as well as the documentation of
results for presentation at academic conferences and their publication in
academic journals.

Requirements:
- A university degree in a relevant field
- Excellent proficiency in English, good proficiency in German
- Experience with the statistical analysis of linguistic data (esp. with R
and/or Python), the analysis of metaphorical language, corpus linguistics
and/or discourse analysis are of advantage
