Description:

The Department of Romance Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the
University of Cologne is currently seeking to fill a PhD Position (m/f/d) in
the Collaborative Research Centre 1252 “Prominence in Language”, sub project
C02 “Tense and aspect in discourse” from April 01, 2021 until December 31,
2024 (65%, 25.89 hours/week). Salary is determined following the salary scale
E 13 according to German TVL.

Project C02 investigates temporal and argumentative discourse structures. The
phenomenon of prominence, the highlighting of certain elements in the
discourse in relation to competing elements, will play a central role.
Temporal discourse structures include relations on the time axis such as
sequence and simultaneity. At the same time, perspective and the creation of
foreground and background structures are also part of it. Taking these aspects
into account, the use of tense forms in narrative texts in Romance languages
can be explained. This approach will now be expanded by including the
functioning of the argumentative structuring of texts and its relation to the
temporal structure in the investigations. In this way, we aim at achieving the
overall goal of the project of a more comprehensive representation of the
temporal and argumentative discourse structure.
