Empirical approaches to regular polysemy

Editors : Lucie Barque (Université Sorbonne Paris Nord & LLF) et Pauline Haas
(Université Paris Nord, Pléiade & Lattice)

Regular polysemy, which refers to regular sense alternations in word classes,
is a key notion in the study of both the dynamic structure of lexicons and the
organization of speakers’ mental lexicons. Many theoretical studies have been
devoted to investigating regular polysemy. More recently, empirical studies
based on the analysis of lexical, distributional, experimental or typological
data have confirmed the fundamentally gradual and heterogeneous nature of this
phenomenon.

The aim of this special issue is to collect studies focused on the empirical
assessment of regular polysemy in order to provide answers to theoretical
issues raised in the literature and to investigate new research directions.

Topics that could be addressed in the submitted papers include, but are not
limited to:
- Assessment of polysemy patterns and of their degrees of regularity based on
the analysis of corpus and/or lexical data,
- Links between regular polysemy and morphological derivation for regular
sense alternations observed in the morphologically complex lexicon,
- Experimental assessment of the mental representation and processing of
regular polysemous words, as compared to irregular polysemous words and facet
words (i.e words with multiple but compatible meanings, such as book),
- Identification of cross-linguistic sense alternations and language-specific
conventions in contrastive studies.

Recommendations to the authors:
- Submission statements including a (provisional) title, the names of the
authors, a list of keywords, as well as a summary that should not exceed 3000
signs (spaces included), are to be sent by email to
lucie.barque at univ-paris13.fr and to pauline.haas at univ-paris13.fr before
September 15th, 2021.
- Submitted papers should not exceed 55 000 signs, spaces, bibliography and
graphics included. They can be written in French or in English ; the summaries
should be written both in French and in English. Please use the following
formatting guidelines: https://lexique.univ-lille.fr/soumission.html. Please
send your submission before February 15th, 2022 to
lucie.barque at univ-paris13.fr and to pauline.haas at univ-paris13.fr
- Submission format: docx or odt, and PDF

Important deadlines:
- Reception of abstracts: 15th September, 2021
- Reception of articles: 15th February, 2022
- Double-blind peer review: from 15th February to 1st June 2022
- Notification of acceptance: 1st June, 2022
- Revision of the articles: 1st September, 2022
- Final formatting and composition: November 2022
