Meeting Description:

Sebastião Rodolfo Dalgado, born in Assagão (Goa) in 1855, was a Catholic
priest, but also became renowned for his linguistic work dedicated to the
Indo-Portuguese creoles, Asian Portuguese, Konkani, and Sanskrit, domains in
which he remains an obligatory reference. From 1908 onwards, he taught
Sanskrit Language and Literature at the Curso Superior de Letras and the
recently created Faculdade de Letras, in Lisbon, the city in which he would
pass away on April 4, 1922.

On the occasion of the centenary of his death, the researchers of
Asian-Portuguese topics at the Centro de Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa
organise the conference Dalgado 100: The work of Sebastião Dalgado, 100 years
on, between April 4 and 6, 2022, aimed at revisiting and recuperating his
linguistic research.

Call for Papers:

We invite the submission of papers for presentation at the conference Dalgado
100: The work of Sebastião Dalgado, 100 years on.

The conference will take place between April 4 and 6, 2022. The mode of
participation will be confirmed in early 2022, taking into account the
evolution of the Covid19 pandemic. However, the organisers intend to hold the
proceedings in person, at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Lisbon
University, while ensuring a long-distance solution for anyone who may not be
able to travel.

Sebastião Rodolfo Dalgado, born in Assagão (Goa) in 1855, was a Catholic
priest, who also became renowned for his vast and pioneering linguistic work
regarding several (South) Asian languages: the Indo-Portuguese creoles, Asian
Portuguese (including its lexical influence on multiple languages of the
continent), Konkani, and Sanskrit (Pereira 1983; Machado 2019). In several of
these domains, his contributions remain unsurpassed. With respect to the
interactions and transformations of Portuguese in Asia, his Influência do
Vocabulário Português em Línguas Asiáticas (1913) and Glossário Luso-Asiático
(1919-1921) — to mention just a few titles — are still unavoidable references,
as well as his (1900) study of Goan Portuguese (see Cardoso 2016), while his
descriptions of the creoles of Daman, Bombay, Nagapattinam, and Ceylon,
published between 1900 and 1917, constitute rare sources for the study of
these languages (see Cardoso, Hagemeijer & Alexandre 2015). Concerning
Konkani, Dalgado's importance for its promotion and standardisation — through
works such as e.g. the Konkani-Portuguese dictionary (1893) and
Portuguese-Konkani dictionary (1905), or Florilégio de Provérbios Concanis
(1922) — is undeniable and widely celebrated in Goa. With respect to Sanskrit,
he acted mainly as a translator into Portuguese of classical works, such as
Hitopadexa, ou Instrucção Útil (1897), and História de Nala e Damayanti
(1916), and as an educator, through his Rudimentos da Língua Sânscrita (1920).

During his lifetime, Dalgado was accepted as an expert in these topics by
several of the most influential scholars of the turn of the 20th century, such
as e.g. Hugo Schuchardt (see Sousa 2013), which earned him the recognition of
institutions such as the Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa, the Instituto de
Coimbra, or the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa. In 1908, he became professor
of Sanskrit, Vedic and Classical Language and Literature, first in the Curso
Superior de Letras and then, after 1911, in the Faculdade de Letras da
Universidade de Lisboa.

On the occasion of the centenary of Dalgado's death, which occurred on April
4, 1922, the researchers of Asian-Portuguese topics at the Centro de
Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa organise this conference with the aim of
revisiting and recuperating his legacy of linguistic research. We therefore
invite the submission of paper proposals, in any relevant discipline, which:
a) explore Dalgado's work in the following domains; b) study the reception of
Dalgado's work in the following domains; or c) research topics in the
following domains with explicit and substantial reference to Dalgado's
contributions:

1) Asian varieties of Portuguese;

2) The Asian-Portuguese creoles;

3) The mutual influence between Portuguese and Asian languages;

4) The Konkani language;

5) The Sanskrit language (including translation).

Talks will have the approximate duration of 30 minutes and may be given in
either Portuguese or English.

Instructions: Send paper proposals, written in either Portuguese or English,
with an abstract (maximum 350 words, excluding the list of references), an
indication of institutional affiliation, and a brief biographical paragraph
to: dalgado100 at gmail.com
