From: Vincent Hughes [vincent.hughes at york.ac.uk]
Subject: Forensic Linguistics; Phonetics; Sociolinguistics: Post Doc, University of York, UK

University or Organization: University of York
Department: Language and Linguistic Science
Job Location: York, United Kingdom
Web Address: https://www.york.ac.uk/language/
Job Title: Research Associate
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Forensic Linguistics; Phonetics; Sociolinguistics

Description:

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is seeking to appoint a
Research Associate to work with Dr Vincent Hughes (Principal Investigator) and
Prof Carmen Llamas (Co-investigator), in collaboration with the Digital
Creativity Labs, on their AHRC-funded project ‘Humans and Machines: Novel
Methods for Testing Speaker Recognition Performance’. The project will examine
the speaker recognition performance of human listeners and machines (automatic
speaker recognition systems), comparing the conditions under which the
different methods outperform one another. As part of the collaboration with
the Digital Creativity Labs, the project will create a novel computer game to
elicit responses from human participants that are equivalent to the type of
statistical responses that machines produce.

The successful applicant will start on 1 November 2021 or as soon as possible
thereafter. The post is full-time and fixed term for 13 months.

Role:
You will initially be required to work through existing corpora to choose
appropriate speech samples to use as stimuli within the experiments and to
collaborate with the Digital Creativity Labs, under the supervision of Dr
Vincent Hughes and Prof Carmen Llamas, to help design the computer game. Once
the game has been developed, you will use it to run in-person and online
experiments to test human speaker recognition performance. You will also
process the same stimuli using a commercial automatic speaker recognition
system available at York (training will be provided where necessary), before
analysing both the human and machine results using established statistical
methods. You will also collaborate with the PI and CI on dissemination and
impact activities.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed:
- PhD in Linguistics or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
- Ability to arrange and run human experiments both in-person and online
- Experience of conducting quantitative research in forensic speech science,
phonetics or sociolinguistics
- Ability to apply established statistical methods from forensic science
- Excellent communication skills to engage effectively with a range of
audiences
