Level: PhD

Duties: Research,Teaching

Specialty Areas: Phonetics

Description:

The Phonetics Work Group at Bielefeld University [1] offers a full time PhD
position within the newly DFG-funded Transregional Collaborative Research
Center „Constructing Explainability“ (TRR318) to work within the subproject on
„Technically enabled explaining of speaker traits“ for a period of 4 years.
The TRR318, which is carried out jointly by the universities of Paderborn and
Bielefeld, investigates how algorithmic transparency can be fostered, in
particular in the context of black-box models as used in state-of-the-art
artificial intelligence systems. The central hypothesis of the research center
is that explanations of algorithmic decisions are most efficient if they are
constructed jointly (co-constructed) by the explainer and the explainee. The
mechanisms of this co-construction will be investigated by an
interdisciplinary consortium to lay the foundations for the sovereign and
informed decision making by humans in their interaction with intelligent
systems.

Duties: Research (90%), teaching (5%), administrative duties (5%)

The subproject C06 project investigates in an interdisciplinary fashion, how
complex para- or extralinguistic voice characteristics can become more
explicable both to phonetic experts as well as laypersons with the support of
a sophisticated speech technological voice modification system.

The applicant will be expected to (1) interpret and model the speech signal
output of a voice modification/conversion system in terms of acoustic-phonetic
dimensions, (2) use the technical system as a support tool in explaining
phonetic speaker traits characteristics to laypersons, and (3) provide
feedback to engineers in the further development of the voice conversion
system.

The candidate should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in phonetics,
linguistics, clinical linguistics, computational linguistics, or speech
technology, and should have a substantial background in speech signal analysis
or speaker trait characterization as well as their statistical analysis. Prior
knowledge or an interest in speech technology is particularly welcome. The
candidate should have a basic knowledge of German, or be prepared to learn
German.

The position will be available for 4 years, starting as soon as possible. All
applications received until June 23, 2021 will receive full consideration. The
salary is according to the German university payscale (TVL-13, 100%). To
apply, please send a CV and a letter of motivation in a single pdf document to
