Copenhagen Phylolinguistics Workshop

Date: 03-May-2021 - 07-May-2021
Location: Copenhagen (Online), Denmark
Contact: Thomas Olander

Meeting URL: https://rootsofeurope.ku.dk/kalender/arrangementer-2021/the-copenhagen-phylolinguistics-workshop/

Linguistic Field(s): Computational Linguistics; Genetic Classification; Historical Linguistics

Meeting Description:

In the workshop David Goldstein, UCLA, provides a hands-on introduction to
Bayesian phylogenetics with the statistical programming environment RevBayes.

The workshop takes place online on 3, 5 and 7 May 2021 and is open to
everybody. Registration is required.

The workshop is organised by the research project “Connecting the Dots:
Reconfiguring the Indo-European family tree” (funded by the Independent
Research Fund Denmark, 2019–2024).

Program Information:

Phylogenetic inference is one of the central endeavors of historical
linguistics. Research in this area is in the midst of a methodological
revolution, which has been brought about by an influx of computational methods
originally developed for the study of molecular evolution and the tree of
life. Foremost among these new methods is Bayesian phylogenetic inference,
which above all enables historical linguists to pursue questions that were
previously intractable. This workshop provides a hands-on introduction to
Bayesian phylogenetics with the statistical programming environment RevBayes.
Although familiarity with linguistic change and the broad outlines of the
history of Indo-European will be assumed, prior experience with Bayesian
methods and programming will not.
