Level: PhD

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Semantics

Required Language(s): Czech (ces)

                      Slavic

Description:

The Institute of Czech Language and Theory of Communication (Faculty of Arts,
Charles University) invites applicants for a PhD researcher position (pay: 65%
of the “VP1” class; based on the Charles University internal wage regulation:
https://cuni.cz/UK-8897.html). The position is available as of 1 October 2021
and will last for 3 years. The applicant will be required to apply for a
suitable linguistic PhD program at the Faculty of Arts of the Charles
University, either General Linguistics (English or Czech) or Czech Language
(only Czech).

Applicants are invited for a position within the project Modelling the
question–statement opposition in Slavic languages (QueSlav), jointly funded by
the Czech Science Foundation (GA ČR) and the German Research Foundation (DFG).
The project is a close collaboration between the Charles University (PI: Radek
Šimík) and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (PI: Roland Meyer). There will
also be a PhD student in the German part of the project, working primarily on
Polish, with whom the candidate will collaborate.

Brief project description:
The QueSlav project investigates polar questions and their kin (bias question)
in Czech, Polish, and Russian. The aim is to further our understanding of how
different formal strategies (syntactic, morphological, prosodic) give rise to
polar/bias question meanings – whether the core interrogative meaning or any
associated pragmatic implications. The research questions will be addressed by
various empirical methods – from corpus investigations, through offline rating
studies, to eye-tracking (visual world paradigm).

For a more detailed description, see https://www.radeksimik.eu/minilab.html.

Tasks of the successful candidate:
The successful candidate is expected to perform joint and independent
scientific work in the areas of theoretical, corpus, and experimental
linguistics, covering the major areas of language description – morphology,
syntax, and semantics/pragmatics. The candidate is expected to take part in
project meetings, which will take place in Prague and Berlin, and to present
the partial results at conferences and publish in standard scientific outlets.
The work performed within the project will eventually lead up to a PhD
dissertation and, together with fulfilling the requirements of the PhD
program, to a PhD degree. The language to be investigated is Czech, but
candidates who would like to work on Russian will also be considered.

Requirements:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in linguistics or a related discipline
(attained by 30th September 2021);
- advanced knowledge (oral and written) of Czech (or Russian) and solid
knowledge of English;
- solid understanding of linguistic theories, ideally with a focus on
semantics and pragmatics;
- experience with quantitative approaches to corpus and experimental work is
an asset.

The deadline for application is 14 June 2021. If no candidate is selected, the
deadline may be extended.

Applicants should send the following materials to radek.simik at ff.cuni.cz by 14
June 2021:
- a short cover letter (max. 1 A4 page) explaining the candidate’s motivation;
- a full CV;
- Master’s thesis (if available) or a sample publication/manuscript;
- contact (email address) for a potential referee (e.g. the MA supervisor)
