Description:

PhD Position Phonetics, starting July 1st, 2021 (E13, TV-L, non-permanent
position)

Your Tasks:
Within the DFG funded project on “Deep speech representation learning for
research in phonetics”, the Faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies offers
a part-time position as researcher in phonetics (65 %). The Bielefeld
phonetics work group is known for its research on spontaneous speech phenomena
in interaction, prosody, multimodality and human-machine interaction. The
Bielefeld research environment offers a stimulating environment for
collaboration both within linguistics and across disciplines, and a wide range
of options of further qualification.

Your research tasks (100 %) include:
- Research in the area of development and evaluation of a flexibly modifiable
deep learning based speech synthesis
tool
- Presentation of research results at workshops and conferences
- Publication of research results in scientific journals and high impact
conferences
- Supervising student research assistants within project work

Your Profile:
We expect:
- Master Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area (e. g. phonetics, speech
technology, computational linguistics, linguistics, computer science)
- Interest in state-of-the-art speech synthesis, basic phonetics research and
its interdisciplinary interaction
- Knowledge in the analysis of speech with adequate tools
- Good English skills (written and oral)
- The ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team
- Independent, self-reliant and dedicated style of work
- Strong organizational and coordination skills
- Strong communication skills
- Distinctive presentation and moderation skills

Preferable qualifications:
- Profound knowledge in statistics
- Prior experience in building and analysing perception experiments

Remuneration:
Salary will be paid according to Remuneration level 13 of the Wage Agreement
for Public Service in the Federal States (TV-L). As stipulated in § 2 (1)
sentence 1 of the WissZeitVG (fixed-term employment), the contract will end
after 36 months. In accordance with the provisions of the WissZeitVG and the
Agreement on Satisfactory Conditions of Employment, the length of contract may
differ in individual cases. The employment is designed to encourage further
academic qualification. The position is advertised as 65 % part-time job. In
individual cases, this percentage may be reduced on request, as long as this
does not conflict with official needs.
