Linguistic Field(s): Anthropological Linguistics; General Linguistics; Historical Linguistics; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 30-Nov-2021

Meeting Description:

The 11th Historical Sociolinguistics Network Conference (HiSoN) will be held
on June 1-3, 2022, at the University of Murcia, Spain. The HiSoN conferences
were begun in 2003 by a group of historical sociolinguists who saw the need
for a forum to discuss research findings and to debate theoretical and
methodological issues concerning language from a socio-historical perspective
within this network.

Macro and Micro Perspectives in Historical Sociolinguistics will be the
thematic orientation for our Murcia edition of the HiSoN conferences in 2022.
Macroscopic research in Historical Sociolinguistics has traditionally been
able to reconstruct the sociolinguistic contexts of language variation and
change as occurred in remote periods largely at the inter-writer level of the
speech community. Additionally, microscopic perspectives are focussing on
individuals and their microcosm, which is complementarily enriching research
through intra-writer designs.

Call for Papers:

HiSoN-2022 invites contributions that call for interdisciplinary approaches to
historical sociolinguistic phenomena and apply macro- or/and micro-
perspectives to the individual and/or to the community focussing on:
inter-speaker and intra-speaker variation, language change, communities of
practice, prestige patterns, identity, attitudes, code-switching,
uniformitarianism, genres and text-types, etc. In addition to this major
trend, contributions to any of the directions within the spectrum of the
socio-historical linguistic paradigm are welcome. The plenary speakers for
HiSoN-2022 will be:
 - Carol Percy (University of Toronto, Canada)
 - Gijsbert Rutten (Leiden University, The Netherlands)
 - Donald Tuten (Emory College of Arts & Sciences, USA)

Proposals:
The three categories for proposals are (1) individual papers, (2) thematic
panels and (3) posters.

1) Individual papers are formal presentations on original research by one or
more authors, lasting a total of 30 minutes (20 minutes for presentation and
10 minutes for discussion). Please note that the time limit will be strictly
adhered to. The length of abstracts for individual papers is max 500 words.

2) Thematic Panels allow for extended discussion on a particular topic with a
cluster of several independent papers and a joint discussion. It is expected
that panel organiser(s) have invited contributors, including a potential
discussant, in advance. It is the panel organiser(s) who take(s) active
responsibility for the quality of the contributions to their panel (i.e. they
decide what is accepted). Panel organisers are expected to guide invited
participants in this process, so that all formal requirements are duly
fulfilled and the abstracts satisfy the expected international standards.

3) Posters: Poster sessions are for displaying research and they offer the
opportunity for individualised informal discussions. Poster is a good format
for presenting work-in-progress, fieldwork and results of empirical research
when data can be presented visually (e.g. charts, graphs, tables). A block of
time will be designated when presenters are available to discuss their
posters. The length of abstracts for posters is max 500 words. Detailed
instructions regarding the appropriate format for on-line exhibition will be
sent to presenters once they have received notification that their proposals
have been accepted.

Submission of Proposals:
Submission of proposals for papers, posters, and thematic panels opens on 1
October, 2021. Please consult the conference website for more information
(http://eventos.um.es/go/hison2022).

HiSoN Conference Presentation Policies:
 - No-one can be considered for more than two contributions (whether
individual or panel contributions). This restriction does not affect the
possibility of taking the role of organiser of a panel or acting as a
discussant in a panel.
 - It is assumed that all proposals represent original and unpublished work
that is not yet available to the research community.
 - In the case of multiple authorship, information about your co-authors must
be provided when submitting the abstract and they must also register to appear
as coauthors in the Conference Program.
 - The language of the conference is English.
 - The conference policy is that the author will present the paper on the day
and time assigned by the conference program committee.

Important Dates:
 - Start of Submission Process: 1 October 2021
 - Deadline for submission of proposals: 30 November 2021
 - Notification of acceptance: mid January 2022
 - Registration: 1 March – 25 May 2022
 - Conference date: June 1 – 3, 2022
