Job Title: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics
Job Rank: Assistant Professor

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics

Description:

Position:
The Department of English and Linguistics is seeking applicants for one tenure
track faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics to
start August 2022. This position is a full-time appointment on a nine-month
contract. There are also summer teaching possibilities. This is an ideal
opportunity for candidates who aspire to a position at a public liberal arts
and sciences institution where teaching high-ability undergraduates is the
primary mission.

The successful candidate will provide classroom instruction in applied
linguistics, courses required for the add-on ESOL teaching certification,
courses for the undergraduate linguistics major and/or English undergraduate
and graduate programs. The candidate will also be expected to engage in
scholarly activity, and perform other service to students (advising,
mentoring, supervising internships), to the department, the University, and
the community. There are also opportunities to participate in the rich
interdisciplinary culture of the University.

The position requires a PhD (completed by the August start date) in Applied
Linguistics and/or TESOL, with prior experience in teaching ESL, and the
ability to teach a course on Language Policy and Planning.

Applicants will be evaluated on academic qualifications; teaching philosophy;
experience in teaching ESL in diverse contexts; experience in teaching
undergraduate and graduate students; demonstrated success in student-centered
college-level teaching; commitment to diversity and inclusion; commitment to
the liberal arts; evidence of effective communication and interpersonal
skills; potential for scholarly achievement; and compatibility with the
department's needs.

Salary:
Salary is commensurate with experience and education. The benefits package
includes life, health and disability insurance, retirement contributions, and
reimbursed assistance for moving expenses. The awarding of tenure and
promotion is based on success in the University’s teacher-scholar model.

Program:
The Department of English and Linguistics currently offers an undergraduate
degree in linguistics as well as minors in linguistics and applied
linguistics, and supports the add-on ESOL certification for Master of Arts in
Education students. Depending on their areas of specialization and research
interests, linguistics faculty also regularly teach courses for the general
education program (first-year seminars and junior-level interdisciplinary
seminars) as well as for the BA or MA in English, and several of Truman’s
interdisciplinary minors.
