University or Organization: University of Zurich
Department: Linguistic Research Infrastructure
Job Location: Zurich, Switzerland
Web Address: https://www.liri.uzh.ch/en.html
Job Title: Data Science Consultant: Machine Learning
Job Rank: Consultant

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Machine Learning, Computer Science, Statistics

Description:

The Linguistic Research Infrastructure technology platform (LiRI,
www.liri.uzh.ch) is a newly established service unit with integrated
facilities for large-volume data processing and empirical science. We work on
the design and implementation of a research infrastructure that allows
linguists and other researchers to work on language-related data, and to
collect, extract and analyze large data sets. LiRI offers a wide range of
high-end measurement devices for recording behavioral (e.g., eye-tracking,
electromagnetic articulography, ultrasound, electro glottography, myography)
and neuropsychological (e.g., EEG, NIRS, brainstem response) data as well as
linguistic data from corpora with a large variety of data types (e.g., high
dimensional time series, image and video data). The launch of LiRI at the
University of Zurich aims at making Switzerland more internationally
competitive in experimental and Big Data based language and speech research.

Your responsibilities:
As a LiRI data science consultant specialized in machine learning (ML) you
will provide theoretical and practical support to linguistic researchers. You
will develop and evaluate ML algorithms (deep learning-based and traditional
ML methods) for a variety of tasks on language-related data and interpret and
explain the models. In addition, you will assist researchers in formally
writing-up the procedures for publication.

Your profile:
As an ideal candidate you have a degree in ML or a related area and experience
with language or speech data analysis. Also, candidates with a degree in
linguistics, language or speech sciences and strong expertise in ML or data
science are encouraged to apply. Practical proficiency with the implementation
of ML algorithms and the relevant programming languages and packages (e.g.,
Python, Matlab, tensorflow, pytorch, scikit-learn) is a prerequisite. Great
emphasis is placed on teamwork and on multidisciplinary perspectives.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential.

What we offer:
We offer a highly interdisciplinary and inspiring scientific work and
university environment with a long-term contractual perspective. The data
scientist will actively collaborate with other data science platforms, with
the newly launched NCCR Evolving Language (www.evolvinglanguage.ch) as well as
with partners in industry. We strongly aim at gender diversity, and we
particularly encourage women to apply.

Place of work:
The successful candidate will join the LiRI team at Zurich (Campus Oerlikon,
Andreasstrasse 15, 8050 Zurich).

Start of employment: Earliest starting date for the position is January 2022.

Further information:
In case of further questions or informal discussions about the position,
contact Professor Volker Dellwo at the email address below.

Applications must include:
 - a cover letter stating your motivation
 - a CV
 - a list of publications (optional)
 - a max. 1 page summary of the most challenging ML task(s) you solved
 - names and email contacts of three referees

Before compiling your application, please check on the following webpage that
the position is still open: https://www.liri.uzh.ch/en.html.

Please send your application as a single PDF file to the application email
address below. Review of applications starts November 22.
