Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Morphology; Semantics; Syntax; Typology; Fieldwork

Description:

The Department of Linguistics and English Language at The University of
Manchester seeks to appoint a postdoctoral research associate through August,
2023 working on the European Research Council Consolidator Project “The
lexical semantics of lexical categories” (PI, Andrew Koontz-Garboden). You
will form part of a team whose goal is to elucidate through the study of
property concept lexemes (see Dixon 1982, Thompson 1989) and constructions in
which they appear, the meaning of nounhood, verbhood, and adjectivehood. The
project will do this through broad typological study and detailed semantic and
morphosyntactic fieldwork on individual languages.

In collaboration with the PI and two other postdoctoral research associates,
the post holder will undertake broad typological study extracting data from
descriptive grammars with the goal of determining the kinds of meanings that
property concept words have when nouns, adjectives, and verbs. You will also
undertake detailed fieldwork on individual languages with the goal of better
understanding their behaviour, and their bearing on our understanding of the
lexical semantics of categoryhood. You will publish results tied to this work
and carry out organizational duties tied to the administration of the project.
Project funds will cover expenses of associated fieldwork, conference
presentations, open access publication, and other costs tied to work on the
project.

The University invites applications for the above post, which is tenable from
January 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of
the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity,
disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are
made on merit.
