Required Language(s): German (deu)

Description:

The DFG-founded project “Kongruenz-Mismatches in Relativsätzen und verwandten
Strukturen: KoMiRe” (Agreement mismatches in relative clauses and related
structures) invites applications for a PhD candidate (DoktorandIn) available
from January 2022 for a duration of three years.

The project focuses on structures in which relative clauses (RC) appear as
attributes to first or second person personal pronouns, for example ‘Ihr, die
kochen lernt, geht oft essen’ = (i). In the relevant structures, the
morphological features diverge between head pronoun (2nd Ps) in the matrix
clause, the subject (=relative pronoun (3rd Ps)) and the finite verb (2nd Ps)
in the RC. The experimental survey will be aimed at several appositive RC
(similar to (i) above), (ii) clefts: 'Ihr seid es, die kochen lernen/??lernt';
and (iii) selected restrictive RC structures: 'Wir sind die einzigen, die
unseren/ihren Sohn versorgen' (especially under the controversial binding of
the possessive pronoun). In the project, German, Polish and Italian will be
investigated. The position is designated for the part on German. The candidate
is required to conduct experiments to evaluate the acceptability of the
relevant structures by currently common survey methods and the use of
generally recognized Likert scale approaches. Based on the empirical findings,
the dissertation should provide insights into the agreement behavior in the
structures to be examined and aim for a theoretical assessment. The candidate
should hold a Masterʼs degree in a relevant field (linguistics, German studies
(Germanistik), psycholinguistics).

Basic knowledge of statistics and a solid training in grammar are expected.
(Knowledge of ANOVA and Italian is a plus.) ZAS occasionally provides
opportunities to acquire desirable skills.

The Doctoral Researcher will be part of Research Area 3 “Syntax and Lexicon”
and will have opportunities to interact with an excellent international group
of researchers active across several areas of linguistics.

Interested candidates should send a single PDF file containing:
 - Cover letter describing your interest in the project and your expertise
 - CV
 - Contact details for two referees
 - 1 writing-sample, e.g., master thesis chapter or paper

Applications should be sent by email to meinunger at leibniz-zas.de by November
1, 2021 (Application Deadline).

ZAS is an equal opportunity employer. We particularly welcome applications
from candidates from the various groups that have been traditionally
underrepresented in the field. The position is paid according to TVöD (Bund)
E13, 65%

Application Deadline: 01-Nov-2021
