ABSTRACT: Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) could help sustain, promote, and
advance research in indigenous languages of the Americas. However, ASR has not
been fully deployed in these languages due to challenges stemming from both
the technology and a lack of speakers to create, curate, grow, and code
software to satisfy the large amounts of corpus require to run these systems.

Additionally, many researchers working on ASR have traditionally not seen work
on endangered languages as profitable. Likewise, technology fields have shown
a lack of interest in learning what is needed to engage in a collaborative
relationship with these indigenous communities has also slowed the deployment
of ASR.

Despite these challenges, there is a growing interest from researchers and
native speakers in deploying ASR in their documentation workflows. This panel
brings stakeholders (ASR technologists, linguists, and native speakers) who
are working on these issues together to discuss current projects, challenges,
solutions, and visions for the future of ASR in Native American Languages.
