Meeting Description:

4th Symposium on West African Languages (SyWAL2020) – ‘Uniformity,
Variability, Diversity’

The first edition of the Symposium (SyWAL2014) was hosted in Naples by
Dipartimento di Asia, Africa e Mediterraneo, Università di Napoli
“L’Orientale”, the second edition (SyWAL2016) was held at the Institut für
Afrikawissenschaften, Universität Wien, and the the third edition (SyWAL 2018)
was organized in Poland by Katedra Języków i Kultur Afryki, Uniwersytetu
Warszawskiego. The 4th Symposium on West African Languages (SyWAL2022) will
return to Naples and take place on the premises of the University of Naples
“L’Orientale”.

The working language of the Symposium is English.

2nd Call for Papers:

The Symposium on West African Languages (SyWAL) is a biennial international
conference meant to serve as a forum to discuss all aspects of studies on
African languages spoken in West Africa and West African languages used
elsewhere.

The 4th Symposium on West African Languages (SyWAL2022) will take place at the
Dipartimento di Asia, Africa e Mediterraneo, Università di Napoli
“L’Orientale”, on the 21st, 22nd and 23th of September 2022. 
The theme of the 2022 conference is ‘Uniformity, Variability, Diversity’.

We invite paper proposals related (but not limited) to the following research
areas: language description, language documentation, typology and comparative
linguistics, sociolinguistics, contact phenomena, cultural linguistics,
computational linguistics, gestures and sign languages, discursive variants
and language registers, oratures and literatures in West African languages.
Although proposals that resonate with the SyWAL2022 theme ‘Uniformity,
Variability, Diversity’ will be especially welcome, proposals may be on any
topic relevant to the Symposium.

Abstract in English or French not exceeding 500 words (including references)
should be sent to sywal2022 at unior.it. The abstract must contain the title of
the paper, author’s name, affiliation, e-mail, and surface address. On
submitting your abstract, please indicate whether you would like to contribute
to one of the proposed panels.

The SyWAL is an in-person event.

Le Symposium sur les langues de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (SyWAL) est une
conférence internationale biennale destinée à servir de forum pour discuter de
tous les aspects des études sur les langues africaines parlées en Afrique de
l’Ouest et les langues ouest-africaines utilisées ailleurs.
Le 4ème Symposium sur les langues d’Afrique de l’Ouest (SyWAL2022) aura lieu
de nouveau au Dipartimento di Asia, Africa e Mediterraneo, Université de
Naples “L’Orientale”, les 21, 22 et 23 septembre 2022. 
Le thème du Symposium de 2022 est intitulé: “Uniformité, Variabilité,
Diversité”.

Nous vous invitons à nous envoyer des propositions de communication liées
(mais non limitées) aux domaines de recherche suivants : description des
langues, documentation linguistique, typologie et linguistique comparative,
sociolinguistique, phénomènes de contact, linguistique culturelle,
linguistique informatique, gestes et langues des signes, variantes discursives
et registres de langue, oratures et littératures des langues ouest-africaines.
Bien que les propositions qui sont en conformités avec le thème de SyWAL2022
“Uniformité, Variabilité, Diversité” soient particulièrement bienvenues, les
propositions peuvent porter, sans préjudice, sur tout autre sujet pertinent
pour le Symposium.

Les résumés en anglais ou en français ne dépassant pas 500 mots (références
comprises) doivent être envoyés à sywal2022 at unior.it. Le résumé doit contenir
le titre de la communication, le nom de l’auteur, son affiliation, son e-mail
et son adresse de surface. En soumettant votre résumé, veuillez indiquer si
vous souhaitez contribuer à l’une des sessions thématiques proposées.

Le SyWAL se déroulera en présence.
