Linguistic Field(s): History of Linguistics

Call Deadline: 15-Apr-2022

Meeting Description:

The Naples conference follows on from the 14th CIRSIL conference (Pisa,
September 2021), which dealt with the complex relationship between language
teaching and dominant ideologies in the modern and contemporary era, in order
to highlight how economic, political and social power relations apparently
unrelated to language teaching have, over the centuries, influenced the
creation of teaching tools, the structuring of different approaches, the
teaching of minority languages and debates on teacher education.

In the same vein, the 2022 conference will focus on the complex interrelations
among linguistic theory, linguistic practice and political practice.

For shedding light on the intrinsically political nature of language, research
and methodological practices in this field, a major source will be the vast
and diverse range of didactic material used for language teaching over the
last two centuries (e.g. examples, exercises or dialogues, but also manuals,
dictionaries, books of exercises, etc.), along with the available evidence of
real teaching (e.g. lecture notes). Using such material, proposals for the
conference will address the profoundly political nature of linguistic facts,
theories and practices over a period of time from the 19th century to the
present day – all with a view to rethinking the past so that it may steer the
present towards a better future.
