Analytics and Discussion Club on Language Policy at the Institute of
Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences is happy to announce a talk
LANGUAGE ENDANGERMENT AND DOCUMENTATION IN BRAZIL

Speaker: Denny Moore, Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi – a research institute of
the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation

This talk will be very general and presuppose no knowledge of native Brazil.
To provide a background for understanding the situation of the indigenous
languages of Brazil, a short history of the indigenous peoples, their contact
with Europeans and the effects of this contact will be given. A sketch of the
history of the study of the native languages in Brazil will be presented. Then
the current situation of the indigenous languages and peoples will be
discussed. The progress and prospects of language documentation in Brazil will
be described, to give some idea of what is happening in this field. Lastly,
the needs of the indigenous communities will be explained.
