Project description:
Our European societies are aging, and hence, with advancing age, bilingual
acquired neurological conditions impacting language and cognition are becoming
more and more prevalent. This project investigates primary progressive aphasia
(PPA), an acquired language disorder caused by a specific type of dementia
affecting language abilities primarily but also other cognitive capacities
including thinking or concentrating. PPA symptoms worsen as the disease
progresses, with devastating effects on individuals' everyday life. Language
is not the only function that is affected in PPA; executive functions,
critical cognitive capabilities allowing us to concentrate, inhibit prepotent
response to stimuli, shift between task requirements are equally hampered.
However, little is known about how executive functions are impaired in PPA,
and whether these critical functions can be improved.

This research innovatively uses a neuromodulation technique, transcranial
Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), to reinvigorate the degenerated (language
and executive function) networks in monolingual, bilingual PPA patients, and
healthy controls, and investigate the effects of brain stimulation on
executive functions. The project will be conducted in collaboration with Dr.
Auriane Gros, CobTek Laboratory and the Memory Center (CMRR), and Dr. Stefanie
Keulen at the Free University of Brussels in Belgium. The potential candidate
will be expected to spend some time at these institutions.
