Meeting Description:
The workshop takes place within The 22nd International Conference of the
Department of Linguistics: Synchronic, Diachronic and Typological Linguistics
(Bucharest, November 18‒19, 2022).
The workshop aims to explore theoretical, methodological, and applied aspects
of today’s terminology, as integrated in the general theme of the conference,
from a double perspective, synchronic and diachronic.
Having its modern origins in the doctoral dissertation published by Wüster
(1931), during the 20th century the terminology underwent a development
similar to the general trend in the humanities oriented towards point-type
research. They can thus be approached by focusing different points of view:
socioterminology (Gaudin 2003), communicative theory of terminology (Cabré
1998), cognitive terminology (Depecker 2002), variationist terminology
(Bertaccini, Matteucci 2006), ‘external’ terminology (Bidu-Vrănceanu 2000,
2001), discursive terminology (Toma 2006). Compared to the previous guidelines
‒ translation, lexical or normative terminology ‒, close to lexicographical
practices, these guidelines bring the context as a novelty. Contextualization
is either textual or discursive, or, more broadly, socio-communal.
The 21st century is oriented towards broadening the heuristic-descriptive and
deductive-interpretative context, from socio-discursive and textual aspects to
cultural aspects, specific to a certain linguistic community or present in
multiculturalism. The cultural impact on research in terminology emerges from
European language policies based on the principles of multilingualism and
multiculturalism.
In diachrony, both theoretical aspects and methodological or applied aspects
will be subject to research. We will focus, on the one hand, on the evolution
of the methodology in terminological research and, on the other hand, on the
description of the formation and evolution of modern terminology, their
relationship with the common language and their impact on it. The relationship
between the internal productivity of the language at the terminological level,
calques or borrowings, has direct consequences on the dynamics of the
vocabulary of a language.
We can also witness methodological innovation, as terminology works with new
information and technological resources specific to the digital age, resources
that change the parameters of research and its organization (for example,
projects within the TRADITAL center or the Realiter terminology network).
Call for Papers:
Faced with this terminological, theoretical, methodological and applied
effervescence, we suggest, without proposing a restrictive direction, the
following lines of thought:
- from linguistic and discursive terminology to cultural terminology via the
transparency or opacity of values in the collective mind;
- convergences and/or discrepancies between humanities, natural sciences and
exact sciences;
- impact of terminology on common language in diachrony and/or synchrony;
- vocabulary dynamics;
- borrowing, calques, lexical creativity;
- terminology, multilingualism and multiculturalism;
- language policies and impact of the English language;
- digitization and impact of new technologies on translation, terminology and
related research methodologies;
- terminology, language acquisition and teaching;
- immersion, intercomprehension, plurilingualism.
Contributions can focus on a single language, on the synchronic or diachronic
axis, but can also investigate terminological phenomena in a contrastive way,
by comparing two or more languages, from the same family or from different
origin.
Keynote speaker: Annick Englebert (Université libre de Bruxelles)
Abstract submission and presentation. Each presentation will last 20 minutes
and will be followed by 10 minutes for discussion.
Workshop languages are Romanian, English and French.
Abstracts - no longer than 500 words (references excluded), in Times New
Roman, size 12 -
will be sent by attachment to the organizers of the workshop: Alice Toma
(cristina-alice.toma at ulb.be) and Annick Englebert (annick.englebert at ulb.be).
Publication. Oral presentations held within the workshop will be published
either in the volume of Proceedings of the 22nd International Conference of
the Departament of Linguistics or in a dedicated issue of an academic
journal.

Format of the workshop: hybrid (Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest,
and online).
Registration fee: € 50 (or RON 250); doctoral students: € 25 (RON 125).
