Meeting Description:
Human history has seen various kinds of migration, caused, by and
large, by geographical, political, economic, or demographic factors.
For the last few years there has thus been talk of the eighth
emigration wave of Croatian inhabitants, predominately to the more
developed EU countries such as Germany. The migration of African and
Asian population to EU countries put its mark on the year 2015, and
the war conflict in the Ukraine has seen significant migrations of a
number of inhabitants from the Ukraine to different parts of Europe,
including Croatia.
Migrations make a significant impact on all aspects of life in the
target countries. But what happens to language in the context of
migrations? What happens to the linguistic behaviour of individuals
involved in such movements on the one hand, and to the domestic
population on the other? What happens to language teaching,
multilingualism, language policy?
This year's annual conference of the Croatian Applied Linguistics
Society aims to explore the relationship between migration and
language, with a particular eye towards applied linguistics in the
context of contemporary migration phenomena, whereby migration is seen
as encompassing both the movement of large populations, as well as
daily migrations of inhabitants from home to work or school. Migration
is also understood in a metaphorical sense.
The participants of the annual international Conference of the
Croatian Applied Linguistics Society are invited to address, study or
